Do you have your personal style figured out?
If you Google personal style, there are endless websites promising to help you “define” your personal style and while they do provide some really great tips, I feel like it’s more of a process than just taking some quiz online.
I feel like I’ve always had an idea of what my personal style is, but I haven’t always been the best at implementing it.
I was talking to a friend the other day about how influence is a reeeaaal thing and I can quickly buy right into it. For example….these black Vans sneakers. I started seeing them everywhere, then I found a new Instagram account (richellexo), she was constantly wearing them and I thought they always looked so cute. Soon enough I was convincing myself I HAD to have them and eventually put them into my cart at Nordstrom. Thankfully, before purchasing, I asked myself if I really loved them or just wanted them.
Don’t get me wrong. I love a good pair of sneakers, but I’ve always been more of a heels girl and I knew it would be a rare occasion that I’d be reaching for those specific sneakers. That whole experience just solidified how quickly I can get sucked into a trend and deterred from what I believe to be my personal style.
And another thing….I’ve always been one to worry about whether or not I was dressed appropriate for the occasion. I never wanted to be too overdressed or too under dressed. Always trying on 50 outfits before making a decision, a decision I was usually not thrilled about. A clear sign of my lack of personal style.
Like I said above, I’ve always had a pretty good idea of what my personal style is, but it is now something I am determined to focus on and totally hone.
One thing a lot of those aforementioned websites suggest is putting together a Pinterest board of images you like. This, my friends, is a brilliant suggestion.
So I’ve had my “Style” Pinterest board since I first got on Pinterest, but towards the end of last year, I combed through it. Anything that REALLY got my eye, I pinned to a Secret board. When I look at that Secret board I can tell you exactly what my personal style consists of….
- denim. lots and lots of denim. Particularly cropped, vintage, flared, distressed denim.
- white. EVERYTHING white.
- monochrome. black, white, tan, gray, stripes – basically if it matches or is a set, I want it.
- lace & eyelet. I will never turn these two fabrics down. (See: allll my Eyelet Posts)
I love a feminine look that isn’t too girly. A bit of sex appeal is always welcomed and a good blazer/jacket will never go unappreciated.
See, I know all this. I knew all of this. But seeing it on that Pinterest board makes it all more real to me and provides me with the motivation to stay true to myself.
From here on out, I’m just going to wear what I want to wear. I refuse to care any longer about what everyone else will be doing/wearing.
And lastly, my wardrobe is still a work in progress, but learning this and writing it has provided me with the energy and desire to once and for all make it what I want.
So here’s to personal style!
